Yesterday was not only my anniversary with the BF but it was also the birthday of a dear friend who’s exploits, care and general existence have made her more like family. Last night, as I sat around the table full of eclectic but HYSTERICAL folks that she’s touched, I was amazed at how groups of people find each other in this crazy sea of life.  In any other time, there would be little to know way that I’d get to know some of these wonderful people other than the heart we all road in on to meet each other and that was Jen’s. She’d asked us to bring a story of the first time we met her in lieu of presents and my story was so “ugh” because I was just having an “off day” (without judgement though! I just think sometimes you’re not in line with yourself but at least those time allow you to know what “in line” feels like). I did want to redo my story but not because it was short and kind of odd (it was an accurate first meeting though) but because I didn’t finish it really to link it to the moments that she and I became sisters. I didn’t get to to reveal the true nature of this girl’s heart! Most of the night was I upset with myself for not coming better than that but then I realized (again) that I have flaws that sometimes even I don’t even recognize as the rear their head. I really don’t mind that so much (any more - perfection literally gave me an ulcer once) so long as I figure out what to do from there so I don’t repeat my lessons (this is a valuable tool I got from “The Artists Way” by Julia Cameron YEARS ago by my other sister Marcella who kind of introduced me to the path of self growth). This is my opportunity to sort of re-steer my story last night and give Jen the story she deserves.

My original Jen story went like this: We both worked at Sundance Channel together but we weren’t friends yet. I was on my to the gym one day. Jen, me and this other girl were in the elevator together. I was carrying this pink Kaboodle (as my toiletries’ case) and Jen looked at me and said, “What the fuck is that? A Kaboodle?”

Now, this story doesn’t really have any indication that this girl would save my life in many different ways years to come. It does highlight her humor though because I think that story is actually quite funny. That was our first meeting however at some point our lives sort of merged into being inseparable. And that act of being unable to separate from her light was a theme across the table last night (this is not something that most people get in their “description” of themselves by other people. Some may make themselves believe they have “light” but deep down you know if you have it or not).  I think of most things that are really really good for me in montage modes (I am a writer after all):

-It was Christmas and Jen and I had just become really good friends. We hung out for dinner and saw movies and I was floored at her kindness and generosity as I’d really only meet three or four people before then in my life who had that kind of capacity for joy of the world’s offerings (even when she was down on herself - Jen had a joy that couldn’t be blued down).  I remember seeing in her TINY TINY apartment that she’d just moved into (she found it from some newsletter I’d sent her) that she didn’t have a stereo. I was in line at The Wiz picking out the biggest home stereo boom box like thing I could find. This thing was at least my size if I stood it up on it’s side. I could barely make it up her stairs but when I got there, she was floored. “Are you crazy?” she cried (in the good way). I remember feeling like I wanted her to know that she was a great person and that she deserved random acts of kindness. It was one of those presents I’ve purchased in my life where I just wanted to do something in tribute to someone.

-Same year but a month later, it was my birthday.  ”Chicago” the movie was the talk of the town and Jen was flabbergasted that I, as a playwright, had never seen the play. I was so excited to see this movie that the posters took my breath away.  Jen had made me a scroll that was a gift certificate to see both the movie and the film. I remember sitting next to her in the Ziegfield opening night of the movie, a little drenched from the rainy winter night, and feeling like a kid who was about to go to Neverland.  Very few people had ever really taken the time to surprise me like that.

-After 9/11, I was living in New York and feeling shaky every day. I was scared in a way that didn’t make me skittish so much as it made me a shadow of myself. The following summer, there was a brown out and the majority of New Yorkers felt like it was another attack. I was tired. It was Jen who suggested we move to California. We’d visited Los Angeles and had crazy hijinx already (from the black homeless women yelling at me for hanging out with white people as I danced on our rented convertible to N.E.R.D., to eating at Asia de Cuba like we had a trust fund and giving a shout out to Dr. Dre when he walked past us once, crashing at a friend’s house while he was getting an apartment makeover by a tv show, being fixed up with a boy half my height (I’m 5″2), crashing at another friend’s house who literally needed Ridilin and a cleaning lady, hanging out with the cast of “CSI” late one night in a cloud of Mary Jane listening Billie Holiday and a D List actor trying to sing his own songs with an acoustic guitar while nobody else paid attention). These adventures for me where real adventures. For Jen, this was her life. I was game. We moved to LA.

-We lived together for a year and nobody has perfected the art of television, gossip rags and pig out food like we have.

-In a few of my questionable relationships, Jen has never judged. She has seen the good in those men but also known in her heart their good wasn’t for me.

-Her family has taken me in as one of their own on a level of generosity I’ve never really experienced since I was in grade school and I basically lived at the Youngs’ household through out junior high and most of high school. Her mother brings tears to my eyes, her Oma makes me laugh from my gut and her father George made me melt with sweetness when he was with us. It was easy to see where the light came from. They all have it.

-When my father died suddenly, Jen picked me up from my apartment and we drove out far into Malibu. I felt like a bomb had gone off in my body and my skin was left to deal. Her spirit carried me that day.

-In most of my adult crisis scenarios, she and my other “sisters” provide only support and solutions. There’s no berating, no drama, no anguish. I never feel drained after being with her except for maybe that time we spent four hours in Forever 21. We just kept saying, “Where are we?”

-When her Papa George passed away, that bomb feeling inside me came back.

-The site of her crying literally makes me deteriorate.

-Even at her own described worst, she is better than most of the people who think they are my family. This action within itself has made me search for people who could at least match her “worst” moments in my life. This is a difficult task for many.

As I write this, I kind of see the difficulty in me picking one story. There are many stories. I did tell her last night there are so many. I led off with the one that sparked it all but I really didn’t finish with the rest of this because its overwhelming in a good way to feel like somebody is in your life like her.  I can only liken it to seeing your favorite play, done by your favorite actor and knowing the best monologue is coming so you hold your breath and close your eyes. Or if you surf and you see the biggest most beautiful wave coming at you and your heart skips a beat.  I am lucky to experience this feeling because of who’s in my life. I realize there are so many people who will never have this experience, allow themselves to have this experience or some people who don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about.

My life has been lucky. Not in the lotto sense but in the sense that I have mostly been exposed to people who are the essence of wonderful. Not just okay. Or cool. But the essence of wonderful. I have been exposed to certain people who would be deemed unreal in most circles and places. These are people who have light inside of them and have no problem sharing that light with those around them. I’m not saying that everyone is a saint or angel or perfect in any way other than being who they are. They are perfect at themselves.  My whole life I wanted siblings. I had fake brothers a lot but they’ve fallen to the waste side. Recently my own brother has become my brother and there’s nothing like it. And yesterday, I realized (again  joyfully) that I have sisters who keep me in their hearts as I keep them in mine - defying time, space and blood.  They just are. On Jen’s birthday, I was given the gift of love again. Of the idea that the scenery on my life’s journey is perfect for itself and so is my company.

I love this article even if I don’t agree with all of it. I’ll not see “Precious” in the movie theaters either because I read the book by Sapphire and I’m not a huge glutton for punishment in a dark theater for an hour plus when I read the news all the time and still get pummeled. I try to do what I can by writing and encouraging people to be their best and to give my opinion when I think people are in the wrong (I expect the same in return most times when I’m not being defensive - Ha!). “Push” is too much for me. I know it’s a situation that happens because I read the news. Going on that journey in a book upset me. When I was younger, I was all for pushing through the discomfort for the sake of support. But I have to remember a great story I had with my dad. When “Sankofa” came out, I asked my dad if he’d see it and he asked me what it was about (it was an indie movie and Detroit was not the epitome of indie film back then). When I told him, he surprised me. “Naw,” he said, “I don’t to get pissed off.” I was incredulous! How can you not watch an original take on slavery?? Well, I get it now that I have age. I feel the pissed off feeling regularly. It’s inside me and it’s come with age. That’s how i feel about Precious. That’s how I feel about little Shania who’s mom pimped her out and now her body was found in North Carolina. It’s how I feel about Jaycee Duggard since she’s lost her 11 years to a psycho.

And, by the way, I hated “Monster’s Ball” so that probably will give you some context. I felt it didn’t do anything revolutionary about race and human emotion. I just wanted to beat Halle Berry’s character in the head for abusing her son. I felt she was weak and alone in a community and that didn’t make me have any sympathy at all for her. If you have that story in the news, it wouldn’t be celebrated at all.

How ‘Precious’ Is Like Palin’s ‘Going Rogue’

If you’re like me and you literally never missed an episode, even when you swore off some of the directions, you’ve got no problem admitting to being a SITC addict. All of my education, cultural training and anything else that would deem me an unlikely fan go out the window (sort of like when I’m a health nut and I eat a bowl of Laffy Taffy without blinking - brain happily shutting down).  Would I like a character that looks like me that’s not the trusty wise old black woman in a young woman’s body (see Jennifer Hudson in the first one - enjoyed it I didn’t think too hard about it)? Of course! But I live in the real world and I can write that story with my eyes closed (in fact, have and do so all the time as I can’t help it).

Women all over the world love these girls as their own best friends because not since the Golden Girls have we perfected the stereotype of the overall female type met with pop culture references that are current and fun. Fun. Not rocket science.  There is no making fun of any kind of stereotype. There’s really not much that’s off limits whether embarrassing (in fashion or in thought process). Just like candy! Try it all and don’t judge.

All of the above you can read at any website that tries to break down the SITC phenom. But here’s what you won’t hear in most areas. Candace Bushnell doesn’t have much to do with this franchise.  A bunch of you are clutching your Dior and falling out (or your Fior - fake Dior). Listen, if you read the book like I did, you know I’m right. Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha are not the same characters in the page that’s on the screen. Candace’s “Sex in the City” is a foggy  Page Six article that focuses on a Carrie Bradshaw that we really don’t relate to like we do when SJP is giving us “Carrie Fever.” Candace’s book is all over the place, dropping character studies with shadows of famous people we should know, instead of giving us situations we should know. Darren Starr was able to do what Candace could not. And here’s my bigger bomb. Patricia Field deserves more credit than Candace Bushnell, without the fashions, we could be potentially watching a painful production of “Lipstick Jungle” - ARGH!

What producers need to understand more than anything is that a production is really EVERYTHING involved - from music, fashion, art - not just the script or the director or the actors. This is about a collaboration in every way.  Us women folk leave no detail unturned. We will notice the restaurant where they eat, the flowers Carrie beats Big with  down to the damn book she read in bed with him.  The reason why the fake SITC sitcoms didn’t work is because we ALREADY HAVE a SITC. Try something else.  None of those other shows were any different other than the marital states or the bitchiness. But that’s not changing the story. We’re good thanks. That’s why we sell out the movies when SITC comes out on the big screen.

Anyways, back to Patricia.  She elevates her status as a designer by becoming the ultimate character creator. You could have anyone else write the movie (there are tons of fans that are screenwriters and the soaps change writers all the time) but if you change Pat Field, we’re out. Period.

The moral of this rambling: Give us who we are and who we want to be at the same time and SITC will always prosper.

I have so so many questions about this video. One, why is Aaron Hall wearing the same suit from the 90s? Two, why is he taking April Fool’s so far in November? Three, how come he doesn’t pay for his kids but he can pay for a “pilot” about dog rehabbing? Is he paying himself royalties for the songs? Oh wonky eyed suit man. You kill me.

I did take dance in high school and college but I was never as talented as the real dancers. In my heart though, I soar. And I get breathless just watching amazing dance. I love it love it love it. So I LOVE watching “So You Think You Can Dance” even though I can’t remember to watch all the time (thank god for the internet). I’m catching up today and this routine literally took my breath away (not just because this is one of my most favorite Me’shell songs either):

One of my favorite things to do in LA is to grab the standard movie crew and hit a midnight show at the Arclight (I mean here’s my extra dollar for assigned seats thank you very much. Who wants to stand next to a rank hardcore comic fan who’s sat on the concrete since 6pm? Not me thanks.) and last night was an adventure.  2012, the new action end of the world movie from Roland Emmerich, was fun ride on the repent train. Special affects were pretty great but you will really enjoy them if you live in any of the cities that get jacked (Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Las Vegas, Beijing, Delhi) because it looks so real that you’re going to check the next time you hit the highway. I suppose you can do anything with lots of money (thus my chief argument against Yankee haters) but you’re supposed to do anything with lots of money. If you’ve got the budget, why wouldn’t you go all the way and do/get the best? Will these special effects change my life? No but they really did make me squirm a bit which is kind of hard to do unless we’re talking insects and then well, I’m cheap.

There are the two classic storylines that run parallel (yes, I know I’m not practicing my art of being an audience member here but I had enough space in my head to do this critique because the script was just eh unlike the visuals which were DAMN!) - your A line which is that the earth’s core is heating up so that the crust of the earth can shift and make Wisconsin the new South Pole. Bamn. Then there’s the B line which is John Cusack trying to get his dysfunctional family (including his wife’s new beau and a couple of other stragglers) on the big ship so they can live even though they don’t have the one billion euros it costs for the ticket. Shenanigans ensue. Danny Glover does not play old Obama but he does play a black president which is still fun to see because we’ve spent a helluva long time not seeing anything other than white guys (we can get a woman every now and then and hopefully that will increase soon cause that’s fun too - scare the hell out of those teabaggers is what I say - sidebar: if they are so scared then how come they’re going to see movies that make a lot of money with all kind of liberal messaging? They have to be going because these movies are making plus twenty million a weekend and that can’t be ALL dems and liberals…sidebar done).

Anyways, yes there’s some stuff about what being human is when there’s a crisis and preventing anarchy during natural disasters. I have to say it totally made me think about how to prepare if I see a big tidal wave coming towards me and the BF. I assumed for a long time death would come with a last minute calm but hell I’m sure I’d scream and totally waste my moments that should be spent saying “I love you” and “I’m at peace with my path.” Maybe I’ll compromise and scream those things. Anyways, you’ve kind of seen this movie if you’ve seen “The Day After Tomorrow” but it’s got a slightly different twist and different people so if you don’t have anything to do for two hours and forty-five minutes, just go along for the ride.

It’s no secret to anyone who knows me that I think “Love Actually” could save humanity. Okay maybe I’m exaggerating but there’s literally something in that wonderful movie for everyone and if you don’t like it then maybe you should do some soul searching in the mirror some time in the mornings before your coffee self arrives into the world.

It would be zero surprise then that I would think “Pirate Radio” a really fun enjoyable experience given the makers of “Love Actually” created this gem of a movie that makes a great story about rock and roll in the UK during the 60s via  fabled Robin Hood and his Merry Men shenanigans.

The movie opens with all of the UK already in love with this group of bumbling DJs who broadcast 24/7 from a boat off the shores of England. Each DJ has their own unique gift to the legend of rock and roll, all quite hysterical and distinct. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays the lone legendary American “The Count” who’s love for rock and roll could nearly kill him.  Billy Nighy is the leader of the gang with his quirky old man contribution, responsible for keeping the Pirate Radio airwaves afloat. Rhys Ifans (whom I loved in “Notting Hill”) plays the pure sex DJ legend “Gavin.”  Tom Sturridge is the teenage “Carl” the newby who’s been freshly kicked out of school and sent to live among the merry men of the Pirate Radio ship. We experience getting to know each DJ through Carl who attempts to survive their fumbling reckless lifestyle in his own way while stumbling upon his own youthful life questions.

I love movies that have music as the main character because music more than most things can unite many of us as we all have our own interpretation and memory attached to any given song that is completely unique to us. The one that that unifies is our love and familiarity for that song with our moment, thus all of us standing there bringing together all sorts of depth to a song that just began as beat or a hum in some body’s head. This movie is a tribute to those who love rock and roll so much that you’d be willing to break laws, yours and others, to stand up for what you believe in. The moments of discovery in this movie aren’t so unique but they are rewarding and heart healthy.

In a time where film is in such a transition, it’s really great to see a movie that can allow you to escape for your plus hour and a half without you looking at your watch or wondering what the hell is going on. Being in the arts and living in Hollywood, I see it when people here go to a movie and don’t enjoy it like an audience member. They’re either actors, writers, directors, hardcore fans who will argue the facts or people who go to the movies just because they’ve got nothing else to do. The art of being an audience member is getting lost, my friends and it’s sad to see. Hopefully this movie will do well and do its part to restore that art. Let yourself go with the album cover montage which I found incredibly well balanced and not just a bunch of Dylan, Springsteen or Hendrix.

When I was in 3rd and 4th grade, my English Teacher at Golightly Elementary School was Mrs. Smith. Not Angelina Mrs. Smith but little chocolate pearl wearing mid-50s Mrs. Smith with the Dorothy Dandridge hair. She was one of the first people to encourage me to continue writing because she saw something in me that I had no concept of. But larger than that, she gave me poetry. Every two weeks, we were given a poem we had to memorize and recite in front of the class. Now, while I know this isn’t the most revolutionary of tasks, it changed my life completely. You see, I was shy. And (I have no problem admitting this) I was a follower. I was the tagalong friend. The one who didn’t say much. The one who was incredibly sensitive. The one who would cry if somebody accused me of cheating or anything else that was against the rules. I have ZERO problem admitting this about myself because, later in life, it would explain a lot of people I had in my life, situations I did or did not act upon, skills that I do and don’t have. But nonetheless, this reciting thing is important because it was the first time I had to do something solo in front of people and had full consciousness about it. Memorizing wasn’t so hard for me. Poems, I learned, were lovely lyrical fun things that you could almost sing on the playground if you already exhausted your “Beat It” singing for the day. At home, in the mirror (I NEVER did this in front of my parents for fear of dying of embarrassment), I was Maya Angelou-like. I had rhythm to my poetry reciting. I did a little dance. I had inflection and sass.

Those things abandoned me in front of class. I was suddenly mono-toned, blurry eyed, out of breath, sweaty and inclined to forget. So I just had to close my eyes and see the words. And that just helped me get through the poem. Not do the poem.

The particular poem below was sent to me from Poem-A-Day (yes I’m a nerd) and I was instantly taken back to the moment I knew I was not to be the one who performed but the one who could understand the performance. My best friend back then, Amika Price, was a little spitfire with dimples and chipped teeth. She had personality as long as Broadway and wasn’t afraid of anyone. I was in awe. She wasn’t inclined to write like I was (but she was the one who passed my short story notebook around demanding everyone read it and then asking me what happens after when she got to the end) but she was born to be in the spotlight. I didn’t know this until she stood up and read the poem below. When she finished, everyone, including clutching pearls Mrs. Smith, was on their feet and energized with a bunch of “I know that’s right” and “You betta say that poem, girl!”

When I got to be near grown and was living in NYC with all my poetry friends (still the silent flower in the corner), I would feel that feeling I felt watching Amika when I would watch Jessica Care, Saul Williams, Jasiri, Asha Bandele, Pierre Bennu, T’Kalla, Sharriff Simmons, Craig Knight, Shelly Nicole…utterly awestruck and proud. Once or twice I tried to be that big bright flower of flowing poetry magnetics but all times I felt the heat of the light on me and the tightness in my breath, the sweaty palms, the tripping and falling of my entire mouth….we all have a purpose in life. And sometimes loving the performance is just as great as performing. If not better (in the case of my Alvin Ailey Company obsession - I can and did dance but I would be no Judith Jamison, Torya Beard or Kamilah Henderson - my love for their performance though made me just as energized, like I was sitting on their shoulders while they moved).

So hear is the poem that gave me my place that I situated in quite nicely I would think. If you can, picture a little precocious chocolate girl, pigtails sticking out, eyes rolling, hands on hip, dimples sticking tough, chipped teeth and big bright eyes reading to you, giving you the whatfor.
