Not your mother’s indie film…

January 28th, 2009

In my other life, I worked at Sundance Channel as an EA and it had to be one of the best times of my life. I got to go to Sundance in Park City (to work of course but the added bonus was being able to be there to see a few friends’ Park City debut including “Five Deep Breaths” (Seith Mann),  ”Morning Breath” (mUMs and diane hoslin)  and “I Am Ali” (dream hampton) when the festival was still foreign to us younger urban kids just tapping the market. Sundance Channel was a fantastic environment, albeit trying sometimes, that was promoting the growth of indie film amongst the mainstream genre. I got to screen docs for the Doc program even though I was an EA. I met Redford a few times. I rode a ski lift to a lunch even though I wasn’t skiing (I did think I was going to die and called Marcella a few times to give her my last will and testament). I was sad to leave but Cali called me (I’m still on the fence if I should’ve answered but I have no regrets at all because fun adventures awaited). I keep up minmally with indie film as a writer but also as someone very interested the business of indie film because I do fear it will go the way of theater and get swallowed by the jabba the hut of assembyline pop culture (there are several pop cultures, I think, but the jabba one that promotes a cash equation over originality always seems to win). Sundance Channel never seemed to want to fold in mainstream to the line up. It wanted mainstream to open itself up to Sundance Channel’s line up. I learned alot there and for that I’m truly grateful.

So lending to that scenario, I came across a very interesting article about VOD and indie film. Enjoy:

Sundance 09: SXSW & IFC

Yesterday, Ingrid Kopp asked me over Twitter what I thought of the IFC/SXSW announcement of launching SX films on IFC’s VOD platform during the fest. My initial reaction was, no biggie, cool for all involved. After a couple more questions, I realized that Tom Hall wrote one of his long and thoughtful pieces that was prompting Ingrid’s question. Of course, in that case, I owe this more thought, but here is what I’m working with:

1. I love SXSW. It is hands-down my favorite festival (and it was so before I got to Austin). I do a bit of screening for them and last year I did some program notes, so I consider myself invested in their success in a small way. I have to admit that bias, though I feel no less supportive of any other festival. I love film festivals in general.

2. Before I left for Sundance this year, I was hearing ads on my brand new Time Warner digital cable OnDemand that they would be offering 13 films from the Sundance line up while the festival was happening. IFC & SXSW are not the first to create this kind of partnership, they just happened to have held a press conference about it, while I never received so much as a press release from Sundance about their Time Warner partnership. Are you feeling like the general public is over Sundance already because it was on Time Warner? Probably not.

3. Sundance’s 10 for 10 made available 10 shorts from the festival available on iTunes during the fest. I believe they did this last year as well. I’ll grant you that shorts aren’t features, but there might actually be more of a market for shorts via download. I haven’t heard any filmmakers or festival programmers wonder if they won’t be able to show a great short they saw at Sundance because it was on iTunes.

4. The trend in the marketplace for video content is toward availability on all screens at the same time. Some people are devoted to the theater, others want to watch on their phone, others want to stay in the comfort of their homes and/or save money. The hardware and companies that bring about total convergence (Netflix, Amazon, Apple so far) are the ones who are going to win. Trying to preserve release windows is a recipe for illegal downloading because release windows are something that the people with know-how are not willing to respect but they just might buy it if it is available for purchase.

5. There was a huge debate around day-and-date back when Mark Cuban’s company launched Soderbergh’s Bubble in the theaters and VOD. There was a lot of hoopla about the strategy and “the sky is falling” predictions, and the film didn’t rake in millions, so the experiment was deemed a failure in the press. But, all concerned with the deal appeared to walk away happy. Bubble wasn’t the kind of film that would appeal to a mass audience so the idea was about capitalizing on the audience that would pay to watch a new, quirky Soderbergh movie. According to their accounts, they achieved that goal. Again, I’m not convinced that preserving windows helps the filmmakers or the companies who are hoping to capitalize on those windows.

6. Most regional film festivals I have attended have significant community followings. They turn out for the festival because the program has been curated by people they trust, to meet the filmmakers and hear Q&A, and to take advantage of the fun parties and events that happen as part of the festival (what can be better than the True/False Mucca Pazza parade?). These kinds of experiences can’t be replaced by sitting in one’s living room and if you have created a valuable experience, don’t discount its power to move people to the theater. I work for the Austin Film Society; we exhibit independent and foreign films, documentaries and even regional experimental work all year round, in addition to tentpole premieres. We can still turn out an strong audience so I’m confident that Sarasota and others like them can too.

7. There is a real lack of information on the numbers here. IFC proudly boasts the many millions of homes that VOD is available in, but I don’t know one filmmaker who has given up the idea of selling DVDs or getting theatrical release because they are making money hand over fist via VOD. Even on VOD, the film is still an unknown to most of those households that have it available. I have to admit to going to my own VOD service and not recognizing the titles as films I’ve wanted to catch, and not being willing to drop $5 to check it out.

There is no replacement for word or mouth, and/or good curation. Maybe if a VOD user sees the SXSW brand associated with the movie, that will mean something and they’ll watch, but it could just as easily and more probably go in the other direction en masse. It might alleviate some festival fears if the IFC folks met with programmers to discuss the kinds of numbers they are seeing in downloads. My guess is that you needn’t worry, though honestly, wouldn’t it be fabulous if we weren’t trying to split a dollar 50 ways while Mall Cop rakes in millions, as Tom points out? Oye, we are really feeling the effects of the lack of funding in the arts and arts education. We need to get Obama on this after he saves the economy and makes peace in the world ;)

I would be very sad if Tom’s questions were answered by his worst fears. Desanguination of festivals in favor of sitting in front of a television at home would be the fall of the last bastion, as far as I’m concerned. I think the only thing we know now is that everyone is willing to experiment to try to find a strong, workable niche in a vast media landscape, and it probably won’t hurt for festivals to jump into the experiment too. Let’s see how it goes in March.

Happy Hump Day!

January 21st, 2009

It’s that time of week to hear the best Overheards in NY! No city like it in the world.

The best Overheard in New York quotes from last week, by your votes:

It Kind of Just Slows Down, and You Need to Jump

Confused man: Does this train stop at 48th St?
Four random people, in unison: No!
Train conductor on loudspeaker: The next stop is 48th Street.
(confused man looks even more confused)

–Downtown V Train

But He Wrote It under the Pseudonym “Anne Frank”

Redhead: Do you keep a standard diary?
Brunette: No.
Redhead: You should. Winston Churchill did, and Winston Churchill won World War II.
Brunette: I think Hitler had a diary, too.

–Fort Greene Park

Overheard by: Lulu
Weren’t You Jamaican Yesterday?

Teenager: I don’t know if I would wear a fur coat, ever.
Friend: I know I would, just as long as it wasn’t raccoon…raccoons are just gross.
Hobo with heavy Russian accent: In mother Russia raccoon wear you!

–LIRR
…Having to Dye Your Hair Blond and Everything.

Random girl: Mr. Smith*, you should come see the play tonight. I’m playing a retard and a Barbie!
Teacher: That must be quite a stretch for you.

–Bard High School Early College
I Thought This Was a Bus

Conductor #1: We are sorry for the delay, there is a stalled e train at 7th Avenue. We will be going uptown on the…uhm…which line are we going on?

Relax, ma.

January 14th, 2009

I know I posted before that I had no idea what kind of future I would have but I wasn’t completely honest. I really didn’t know what kind of future I was going to have but I also always rushed it. I had a flashback of being five years old at school and singing my own made up to tune “I can’t wait…I can’t wait…I can’t wait til I get six!”  Why couldn’t I wait? I have no idea. It wasn’t as if you got free cookies if you were six or you got to pick who read to you or you could spend all day doing pudding painting if you were six. All these things were true when I was five. So why six?

At fifteen I had a reason to be anxious for sixteen. I could legally (by legally, I mean in the parental judicial system) date! I could go out on dates and get boy phone calls and all that. Oh the joy! Except the boy I was dating turned out to be an asshole and ended up dating my then best friend two years later. So much for that business. The silver lining was that I got a great boyfriend after that and spent a year and a half in a relationship that would definitely be a marker for all to follow (even if we didn’t work out, it was a great time)…did I follow? Well, it took a few years for me to really put that standard up like my Right On Posters but eventually I would (ahem, fourteen years later but who’s counting? Wait, I am…nevermind).

At eighteen I left the house to go to college in New York. But I could’ve left the house at seventeen to go to college too. So that was a bust. I didn’t get carded when I was twentyone and enjoying my first escargot at a village restuarant that was BOB (hammered on white wine and good friends…that was the best). From that point on, the milestones kind of died down until I hit my Saturn Return at twenty-seven and spent a few years under a crazy dark cloud of WTF? and emerged as a thirty year old in another relationship that would kind of define me in a different way as I’d never lived with anyone before and it had been years since a man kind of said he wanted to marry me with some spark of truth to it even if it kind of puckered out in the end.

So now I hit the mid-30s and I’m in a great relationship that makes me feel like I’m a human with with some superpowers that appear when needed which is always great because maybe that’s what we are supposed to be. Humans with some super powers that appear when they need to. All this to say something that I told Alyse (the wonder webber who designed this home you’re reading) the other day: Every moment has a purpose. We learn, laugh, love, hurt in moments so rushing them seems a bit like we’re bound to miss something. Almost like whatever high power you might believe in (sometimes for me, it’s my Dad who is very close with God now - like I imagine them watching football together) says, “Relax, ma. I got this.”

Enjoy my birthday as if it were yours!

PS

The “relax” is not so original. I stole it from Scott. But I like to say I “share” it with him. :)

Team Overheard

January 07th, 2009

So every Wednesday day, joy comes into my email inbox and now I’m going to start sharing.

http://www.overheardinnewyork.com/

Freshly-Minted Wednesday One-Liners

Annoying Jersey girl on cell: I’m not frugal. I’m, like, not frugal with a vengeance. I, like, refuse to consider money.

–19th & 8th

Overheard by: Hobo

Columbia University administrator: It gets difficult to manage finances as your endowment reaches the size of the GDP of a small country.

–Columbia University

Overheard by: Senatore

Bike messenger (yelling): Could anybody spare $50,000?

–6th Ave & 20th St

Overheard by: thiess

Man: I mean, what does does she *really* get out of riding a five thousand dollar scooter?

–Outside Think Coffee

Overheard by: nemily

Suit on cell: You see, the thing with money counters is they jam…and when you are in a roomful of illiterate afghans, there’s 8 million on the table and they mistrust you.

–Mercer & Grand

Professor: I bet none of you wrote that in your admissions essay. “I want money.” Actually, that might be successful. They might think, “hey, that’s pretty cool, they’re telling the truth.”

–NYU Law
10 Bucks Says He Falls to His Death in a Reflecting Pool

Little boy, singing and dancing: I’m too sexy for my skin, too sexy to be here, too sexy for this train. Oh yeah!
20-something woman: Stop it! Be quiet!
(train doors open)
Little boy, yelling
: I’m gorgeous! (taunts 20-something woman and other passengers with a teddy bear, throwing his arms in the air) I’m gorgeous!

–R Train
Wednesday One-Liners Win the Door Prize

N train conductor: Ladies and gentlemen, “stand clear of the closing doors” does not mean “throw yourself into the closing doors inflicting bodily harm to yourself.”

–N Train

Sassy male train conductor: Yo! Release the doors so the train can leave the station! There’s another train behind this one. We can wait here all day, ladies and gentlemen, I’m already at work. (pause) Okay, well it seems that people just aren’t ready to move yet! Oh…oh…there we go! Well done! How about a round of applause?

–A Downtown Express

Train conductor over loudspeaker: We’re having a problem with the doors. That’s not me closing them on you. These doors have a mind of their own.

–NJ Transit

Conductor: Ladies and gentlemen, please stand clear of the closing doors. If I catch you holding the doors open, I will push you off the train and if you don’t die, then you’ll have to catch the next one.

–NJ Transit

Irate conductor: Ladies and gentleman, putting your baby stroller between the closing doors is a wonderful way to show your child that you care. It will also save on college tuition. There will be another q train, but there will never be another baby like that one. Please stand clear of the closing doors.

–Q Train

Jeez, Who Wouldn’t Want Devastating Vortices?

Overcaffeinated teen with drink: I need to blend this. I wish I had blenders for hands.
Serious friend: Some people would want to be able to fly or read minds… I guess that’s a pretty good super power too.
Overcaffeinated teen with drink: I’d used my blender hands to stir up the air and fly, like helicopter propellers.
Serious friend: Come on, think about the physics of that. If anything, you’d just create two devastating vortices on either side of you and suck everybody in. No flying.
Overcaffeinated teen with drink: If we’re already asking for blender hands, I think a minor change in the laws of physics would be workable.
Serious friend: True. (spins hands like blender-propellers)

–6 Train

Who Says New Yorkers Can’t Be Gracious?

White guy, yelling to friends: Yo, where are you going? The train is this way!
Random black guy: It’s not the fucking train! It’s the fucking subway!
White guy: I live in Queens, I know what it’s called.
Black guy: You white people are so fucking stupid. You go into the subway to get on a fucking train!
White girl: Well then it’s a train!
Black guy: Fuck you, bitch!
White guy: Don’t call her a bitch! You don’t even know her!
Black guy, getting in their face: Fuck you, nigga! And fuck her! (pause) Wait…have you guys been drinking?
White guy: Yeah.
Black guy: Never mind, then. I was just fucking around. We cool?
(black and white guys laugh about it, shake hands, go their separate ways)

The Born Days

January 07th, 2009

Soon I will be 35 and I could write this and say I had all these expectations about where I thought I’d be by now but really I’d be a liar because I’ve always harbored the deep dark secret that I see time lines as blurry dream sticks that just bounce around. My dad asked me what I wanted to be when I was kid and I said lawyer because I knew he wanted to hear either that or doctor but I had no desire to see any blood on purpose any time soon. We’d just come back from a field trip to the morgue at Wayne State University (still trying to work out who thought it was a good idea for sixth graders to go the morgue). Did I see years of schooling for this default legal field that was never to be mine? No. I saw LA Law on TV all the time though.

I actually like the age I’m in. I feel adult. I feel sound. I feel like a newborn baby raw with emotions still. And, since my father’s passing three and a half years ago, I feel like I’m more open to guidance. Especially from him. It’s almost necessary in my daily life. He being gone on the physical plane has made me more of a child than ever. Perhaps also I feel so akin to him now because our birthdays are ten days apart. He’s sort of guiding me by ten days! And, as an added bonus, I get a younger brother who thinks he’s older because he’s taller. But he is definitely a wonderful product of this continued spirit rearing I’m getting from Larry Robinson!

Once I thought I’d be married with a kid by now, that much I can admit. I always knew that my writing would take awhile to hit a level of success that most are familiar with. But the family part was something I thought was inevitable. With my big changes this year, I find this place I’m in kind of funny ironic. An ex who’s married with a kid. Me in a loving relationship enjoying the present moment and hoping for a lifetime of continued joy. I don’t have many “supposed to be like this” markers anymore. In an effort to not end up in the situation my mom was in, at an early age, I think I was trying coerce some of the actions of my life to be a certain way (with good intentions of course. children should go further than their parents!) much to no avail.  The good things are that I am still loving, that I would love to still have babies, that I am still writing.

I realize it’s been a while since I posted a blog! I blame Facebook. It’s addictive. Updating my status every few hours made it impossible to come up with something fresh to write, in my mind. It’s like lazy writing that Facebook. Plus it’s dangerous, this internet networking thing. I am convinced it set the course of a few “coincidences” from past relationships that led to their demise. I’ll never know for sure but it is dangerous boundary to feel safe in the privacy of your own keyboard as if you weren’t really touching people across the great internet divide. I still feel raw about it sometimes but then I breathe and realize you can’t know what you don’t know until you know.

Another scenario is that of the faux business networking on the internet. Lord knows I love to email folks as the day is long. I’m shy (no, really, I am) and don’t love cold calling new potential managers/agents, etc. I hide behind my @ sign on the real. Except when it comes to be approached to work on new projects. This has happened to me a few times but particularly one instance comes to mind since somebody found me online and approached me to work on a potentially good idea with them given my background in entertainment. Great! Except when I’m invited, especially over the www, I like to feel welcomed and not like I have to re-earn my invite after I sat down and pulled out my wares. Sensing the resistance and the interrogation spotlight coming, I pulled out to finish my damn new screenplay. I mean seriously. I’ve come a long way to allow myself to make these kind of decisions. There was a time where I felt like I had to take what came since it came but I am getting too seasoned for that now. It’s not a boast because I’m not making money off of writing yet but I also didn’t just pick up a pen either. I have to set my internet boundaries this year to avoid these things I am looking at closely with one eye open…it is a condition of the future coming quick I suppose.

Lastly, I just had a thought. Writing is cheaper than therapy. And sometimes I’m just as resistant to each! But not anymore. Life is too short. Pop was here for a reason and that was for me and some others to learn to live.  Here’s to being present right now!
